Baz'Art 2020

Shenkman Arts Centre is announcing a call for local and regional (from within 150 km of Ottawa) artisans and visual artists to participate in the 11th annual Baz’Art winter arts market and exhibition.

The Baz’Art 2020 artisan market will take place in the upper and lower lobby areas from 11 am to 4 pm Saturday, November 28 and Sunday, November 29.

Visual artists will exhibit and offer their work for sale in the lower lobby area from November 28 to December 16.

Other seasonal events (some independent of Baz’Art) will be taking place throughout the Centre during the weekend, bringing together a variety of music, theatre, visual art and handcrafted gifts. There is no commission on sales – it’s all yours!

Artists and artisans will be selected through a jury process. Submissions are juried based on artistic merit, professionalism and suitability with event programming. The jury loves to see unique, original work and will not consider submissions that were not created by you - no mass-produced prints or reproductions, please. As a scent-free workplace, we do not accept submissions that include scented or body products. Keep in mind the local community is drawn to affordable artwork at this event.

If selected by the jury, a non-refundable participation fee will be required. Participation on both days for artisans is mandatory.

By applying to this event, and if selected by the jury, you:
  • Give permission to the City of Ottawa and Shenkman Arts Centre to use your biography, name, likeness and artwork for media information and publicity purposes.
  • Certify that the artwork submitted is original artwork created by you.
  • Agree to abide by the rules and guidelines laid out. Incomplete submissions will not be considered.
  • Recognize that any insurance coverage of the artwork is your full responsibility. The City of Ottawa assumes no responsibility for insurance covering loss or damage while the works are on exhibit or in transit to or from the event.
One submission per participant, please. Applicants will be notified of jury results by August 21, 2020. Jury results are final. No jury feedback can be provided. Jury selections are subjective and event-specific and should not be considered a comment on the quality of submitted work.

Your images are the most important part of your submission and are presented to the jury via digital projection. Please double-check all images before sending. If you are not familiar with, or comfortable with photographing your work, there are online resources that provide how-to information, or you could approach an experienced friend or hire a professional photographer. A couple tips:
  1. Images should be sharp and in-focus, with artwork well-lit.
  2. Don’t include walls, frames or other artwork in the background – submitted artwork only.
  3. Orient your images (portrait or landscape) the way you want the work to be seen. Event staff will not correct your images.

The timeline for re-opening City of Ottawa facilities and returning to normal operations is being reviewed on a regular basis in consultation with Ottawa Public Health officials and the federal and provincial governments. Please monitor this website for any updates regarding this event.


Sell your original creations in the Shenkman Arts Centre upper and lower lobbies – locations to be designated according to participant requirements, facility resources and other events in the building. Artisans are expected to provide their own display setup (we have a limited number of six-foot tables in the building - please let us know if you would like us to provide you with one), be at their exhibition location during the event and are responsible for their own insurance and cash handling. Allotted space is 8 feet wide by 6 feet deep and not all spaces are against a wall or have power. Please be sure of your space requirements - it is difficult to add space. For the comfort of our staff, visitors and other vendors we cannot accept submissions for scented products. Approximately 25 vendor spaces will be available. If selected by the jury, a non-refundable $50 participation fee will be required. Participation on both days for artisans is mandatory. Load-in begins at 8:30 am November 28.

Visual Artists

Artwork dimensions may be up to 20 inches by 20 inches maximum – including frame.

Each artist may exhibit 6 works at one time, but pieces may be replaced as sales occur.

Artwork must be able to attach to the Centre’s installed hanging system. Work must include hanging wire, or accessible D-rings, etc.; no sawtooth hangers, please. Please make an appointment to visit if you have questions about the space. If selected by the jury, a non-refundable $25 participation fee will be required. Visual artists are not required to be in attendance and will be contacted about any sales enquiries during the exhibition. Artwork drop-off will be the morning of November 26, with the final pickup on December 17.
